Ambercycle on the LAUNCH Pad

Manufacture polyester without crude oil derivatives? A company called Ambercycle has a new prototype technology that they hope will make that happen and be more cost-effective. Their technology has been considered so innovative that they have been selected as one of the top 10 innovators for the 2013 LAUNCH Challenge. What’s that you may ask? The LAUNCH Challenge is a collaborative effort between NASA, the US Department of State, the US Agency for International Development and Nike. Their goal is to create a more sustainable future through innovative ideas, technologies or programs. Extremely cool.

Congratulations go out to Unifi and their Repreve® products

Congratulations go out to Unifi and their Repreve® products. SCS Global has given Repreve the Responsible Source certification. It’s no easy process either – there are 8 steps involved before you can receive your certification. Plus, there could be certification maintenance and renewal involved depending on your product. Side note: Repreve raw materials are made with recycled plastic bottles – check out their website and their plastic bottle counter to see how many plastic bottles have been recycled this year.

Eastman Receives Stevie Award

Congratulations to Eastman for winning the Silver Stevie Award (Company of the Year – Chemicals) in the 2012 American Business Awards. There were multiple categories (and three winning levels for each category – bronze, silver and gold) with over 3000 companies submitting nominations. This award is quite a feather in their cap and it is the second award they’ve won this year . . . Eastman also received the “Sustained Excellence in Caring for Texas” award from the Texas Chemical Council.

Biodegradable Plastics in Style

How many pairs of shoes do you have? 5? 20? More than that? Only admit how many in a court of law? Well, Gucci has gotten into the biodegradable/sustainable act with their new line of shoes, Sustainable Soles. Using biodegradable plastics, GUCCI has come up with an haute couture look to make you feel better about the shoes you own (except for the price of course). They have even certified the plastics according to UNI EN 13432 and ISO 17088. It’s nice to see other industries (in addition to the nonwovens industry) coming up with innovative uses for biodegradable plastics.
